Forest Disturbances Threatening Cypripedium calceolus Populations Can Improve Its Habitat Conditions

چکیده
Inappropriate forest management activities, above all clear-cutting, are recognized as the major threats to an iconic orchid species—the lady’s slipper (Cypripedium calceolus), flagship species of nature protection in Europe. Although clear-cutting protected species’ localities is strongly regulated many European countries, salvage logging allowed some circumstances (e.g., following windstorms, and insect outbreaks) can threaten C. calceolus populations. In this paper, we review a database recently registered populations Czech Republic study historical maps, better understand history local habitat conditions assess by bark beetle outbreaks. We found that about one-third have suffered coniferous or mixed tree plantations with high proportion spruce trees, which forests risk infestation. measures distinguish efforts areas known result no damage population and, at times, improve for species. Thus, beetle—usually understood enemy—can be transformed into savior if smart will replace panic logging.

Can forest management based on natural disturbances maintain ecological resilience?
Given the increasingly global stresses on forests, many ecologists argue that managers must maintain ecological resilience: the capacity of ecosystems to absorb disturbances without undergoing fundamental change. In this review we ask: Can the emerging paradigm of natural-disturbance-based management (NDBM) maintain ecological resilience in managed forests? Applying resilience theory requires c...
متن کاملStream Habitat Conditions on Industrial Forest Lands in Coastal Oregon
In the summer of 1998 and 1999, watersheds in western Oregon were randomly sampled for stream habitat conditions. Sites were selected using a random tessellation stratified design. Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Aquatic Inventories methods were used to quantify indicators of sediment supply and quality, riparian forest connectivity and health, habitat structure, in-stream complexity, an...
متن کاملHow can audio technology improve working conditions?
Hearing is one of the most important human senses. The fact that we can perceive sound helps us to locate and classify sound sources and forms the basis of our speech communication. The healthy hearing system is astonishingly robust towards adverse acoustic conditions such as background noise, competing speech or reverberation. In modern societies, however, hearing deficiencies are widely sprea...
متن کاملLiving at the edge: local versus positional factors in the long-term population dynamics of an endangered orchid.
Populations at the margin of geographic ranges of distribution have been considered more vulnerable than central ones, but recent reviews have caste doubt on this generalization. We examined the reproductive and demographic performance of a rare Euroasiatic orchid (Cypripedium calceolus) at its southwesterly range limit and compared our findings with those of previous studies of nine central po...
متن کاملAnthropogenic disturbances infiltrate forest fragments.
In the years after Edward O. Wilson and Robert MacArthur’s seminal book, The Theory of Island Biogeography (1), which laid the foundations for understanding species diversity and extinction rates in isolated habitats, was published in 1967, a flurry of papers erupted on the effect of fragmentation in tropical rainforests. The big question at that time was whether it would be more advisable to p...
